Women: Analyze Your Career

Common Pitfalls 7-Question Mini-Assessment

Companion to Sun Tzu for Women: The Art of War for Winning in Business

Women face many pitfalls that can jeopardize their careers. This mini-assessment is designed to help you begin to see if some of the pitfalls outlined in Sun Tzu for Women are adversely impacting your career.

Question I. Authenticity

  1. As I look back on my career, even as I have become a seasoned professional, I have frequently tried to adapt to others’ communication, leadership, management, or inter-personal styles, instead of trying to be true to my own.
  2. I’m not certain what my “style” is or how I would define it.
  3. I am comfortable carrying myself and operating as I am. While I am open to learning, I need not adopt someone else’s standards.
  4. I have a strong sense of who I am professionally.

Assessment: If you identify with 1 and 2, you struggle with your own authenticity. Your goal should be to affirmatively respond to 3 and 4.

If you struggle with this, ask yourself what it will take for you to accept that you are good enough based on your accomplishments thus far in your career? What’s missing? Evaluate your career objectively and gauge its success, as if you were an outsider. Then determine the root of your authenticity crisis. Is it lack of self belief, or an inability or unwillingness to put your assets into action, or something else?
